Detail Description

Product Information:

GETOFIN 2gm IV Injection contains Ceftriaxone 2 grams as the active ingredient. Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, and some Pseudomonas species (limited). It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.

This high-strength formulation is reserved for severe, life-threatening, or hospital-acquired infections requiring aggressive parenteral therapy.

⚠️ Note: Despite the brand name "GETOFIN," this product is not related to finasteride or antifungal agents—it is a potent cephalosporin antibiotic.

Uses of (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

  1. Severe community-acquired or hospital-acquired pneumonia
  2. Bacterial meningitis (including in adults and children)
  3. Complicated intra-abdominal infections (with metronidazole)
  4. Pyelonephritis and complicated urinary tract infections
  5. Bone and joint infections (e.g., osteomyelitis)
  6. Sepsis of unknown origin (empirical therapy)
  7. Febrile neutropenia (in combination regimens)
  8. Surgical prophylaxis in high-risk procedures

Key Benefits of (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

  1. High-dose coverage for severe or resistant infections
  2. Once-daily dosing due to long half-life (~8 hours)
  3. Excellent penetration into cerebrospinal fluid, bones, and inflamed tissues
  4. Stable against many beta-lactamases
  5. Dual excretion (renal and biliary)—safer in mild renal or hepatic impairment

How To Use (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

  1. Administered intravenously (IV) by a healthcare professional.
  2. Reconstitute with sterile water for injection, then dilute in compatible IV fluid (e.g., 0.9% NaCl or 5% dextrose).
  3. Infuse over 30–60 minutes (slow infusion reduces risk of biliary precipitation).
  4. Standard adult dose: 2 grams once daily (may be increased to 4g/day in life-threatening infections)
  5. Duration: Typically 7–14 days, depending on infection severity and response

When Not to Use (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

Do not use if you have:

  1. Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins (cross-reactivity possible)
  2. History of anaphylaxis to beta-lactam antibiotics
  3. Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia (risk of bilirubin displacement)
  4. Concomitant use of calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates (risk of fatal precipitates)

Side Effects of (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

Common: Diarrhea, nausea, rash, elevated liver enzymes, phlebitis at infusion site.

Rare: Headache, dizziness, blood dyscrasias (e.g., eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia).

Serious (rare but more likely with high doses):

  1. Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
  2. Hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  3. Biliary pseudolithiasis (reversible gallbladder sludge—monitor with prolonged use)
  4. Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia
  5. Discontinue and seek immediate help if severe diarrhea, blistering rash, jaundice, or dark urine occurs.

Dosage: (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

  1. Adults: 2g once daily (up to 4g/day in meningitis or sepsis)
  2. Children: 50–100 mg/kg/day (max 4g/day)
  3. Meningitis: 100 mg/kg/day IV (max 4g)
  4. Renal/hepatic impairment: Usually no dose adjustment needed (dual excretion pathway)

Who It’s For (GETOFIN 2GM IV INJECTION):

Hospitalized adults and children with severe systemic infections, including ICU patients, post-operative cases, or those with compromised immunity. Not for mild or outpatient infections.

Warnings & Precautions:

  1. Avoid in patients with known cephalosporin allergy
  2. Monitor for C. difficile diarrhea during and after treatment
  3. Prolonged high-dose use may cause biliary sludge—consider ultrasound if abdominal pain occurs
  4. Do not mix with calcium-containing solutions (especially in neonates)
  5. Cross-reactivity with penicillins: ~5–10% risk in allergic individuals

Drug Interactions:

  1. Aminoglycosides: Additive nephrotoxicity—monitor renal function
  2. Loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide): May increase nephrotoxicity risk
  3. Oral anticoagulants: Ceftriaxone may enhance anticoagulant effect (monitor INR closely)
  4. Always inform your doctor about all medications.

Additional Information:

Store unreconstituted vials below 25°C. After reconstitution and dilution, use immediately or within 24 hours if stored at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children. For hospital or clinical use only. Available by prescription in Pakistan.
